Why We Relay

Relay For Life is a community fundraising challenge for Cancer Council. We raise money in the lead up to the overnight event, and take turns walking around the track to signify that cancer never rests, so neither do we.

Cancer Council’s vision is a cancer free future. Underpinned by research, 61,000 Australian lives have been saved by improvements in cancer prevention, screening and treatment over the past 20 years.

But with an estimated 134,000 new cases of cancer expected to be diagnosed in Australia this year, we need every Australian to rally behind us and help continue this vital work.

Locally, in the Shoalhaven we partner with the Local Health District to deliver practical support services to cancer patients and their families. We have a full time Cancer Council staff member based at the accommodation facility at the Shoalhaven Cancer Care Centre.

This enables us to provide the right support to cancer patients and their carers when they need it most, whether that be accommodation, financial assistance, legal and financial advice, support from trained oncology nurses or transport.

Because of Relay For Life, last financial year Cancer Council’s volunteer transport drivers drove 31,451 kilometres throughout the Shoalhaven, driving cancer patients to treatment and other medical appointments.
