Why We Relay
Welcome! Relay For Life is a fun and moving overnight experience that raises vital funds for the Cancer Council’s research, prevention, information and support services. Relay is a chance for the Sutherland Shire community to recognise and celebrate local cancer survivors, patients and their carers, to honour and remember loved ones lost to cancer and to raise money to help save more lives. You and your team can stay at the event as little as 1 hour OR take the challenge to keep a member of your team on the track the whole 24 hours – it’s up to you.

All other teams must rebook their camping spot for the 2019 event. It’s advised that all teams registered must book a camping spot, and have a minimum of FOUR people also registered to the team.
Please register your team and camping spot before 31st March 2019 to help assist us with allocating the spaces available and email us the details below ASAP.
We request that teams only book one campsite per ten participants.

The Relay For Life Banquet was introduced with great success in 2009. It is a group outdoor dinner, situated on the track, and is a great time at the event to sit and relax with your team mates (and friends and family) and enjoy the entertainment on the main stage.
Banquet guests are encouraged to bring their own food from home, order in food from a local takeaway restaurant, or purchase food onsite from the catering marquee for dinner.
Banquet tables must be booked and paid for in advance - a table and 10 chairs is $50. The banquet will be located in front of the main stage around the track and will be designated as per the order of the booking. Specific table locations will be available after 4pm Saturday at the Information Tent.
For those that haven’t booked in advance get them to fill out a Banquet Order forms (see folder). Banquet starts at 7:15pm

Banquet tables will be set up in front of the stage after the Candlelight Ceremony.
What if it is raining?
The Banquet will still go ahead if raining, but will be moved to an undercover area. A wet weather plan will be decided as needed on the day.
Prizes will be awarded for the best themed table and the best dressed banquet guests.

Shelley Wood worked tirelessly on the Relay For Life Committee and the event, alongside her family, to bring hope, courage and inspiration to others affected by Cancer. Despite her treatment and the effect cancer had on her health, Shelley continued to give back to others with a huge smile and a love for life.
Shelley attended the 2005 Shire Relay and read the OATH at the Opening Ceremony, shortly before passing away on 21 June 2005. Her memory lives on through the volunteer work of her family, Marion and Don Wood (parents) and Stuart Wood (brother) and the Sutherland Shire Relay For Life Shelley Wood Award.
The Award is given each year to a survivor who also has experienced the effects of cancer; someone who against all odds, has fought back and overcome their life circumstances, and who looks beyond themselves to the welfare of others to bring hope, courage and inspiration. Invitations for nominations are requested each year at the Sutherland Shire Relay For Life.
The Shelley Wood Award winner is announced at the Wrap Up Function where an Award is presented. Please nominate a survivor and write the story of their diagnosis, treatment and journey of living with cancer.

Want to challenge yourself this year at Relay? Participate in the Everyone Marathon at the 2019 Sutherland Shire Relay. The Marathon is fun and achievable for all. All the information you need, including FAQ's are below.
This Everyone Marathon is open to ANY participant who wishes to WALK OR RUN 42km in total.
A timing chip must be purchase upon registration at a cost of $5.00 per chip, so you can record your laps and kilometres completed during the marathon. Every participant who finishes the Everyone Marathon receives their very own medal.
On Saturday 4 May, you will need to register for the marathon at the marathon Registration desk, located next to the start line. Registrations open from 7am.

On Saturday 4 May, arrive at 7am to register for the marathon at the marathon Registration desk.
Once registered for the Everyone Marathon you must purchase a timing chip at a cost of $5.00 each. Each timing chip is linked to an individual’s name. Each participant will do their own laps with their own timing chips. Results can be viewed live through a website that will be given out at registration.
At the end of the marathon, every participant who finishes will receive their very own medal.
Refreshments will be available, but we recommend you bring your own water bottle to refill, and snacks to keep your energy levels high.
There will be warm up activities and stretches to get you ready for the marathon starting at 8.45am.
Answer: The track is made up of 2.5 metres of bitumen track with a 5 metre specially built grass track giving an overall 7.5-metre-wide track.
Answer: The track is 440 metres long (Sylvania was 400 metres).
Answer :96 laps which is calculated by dividing 42.195 kilometres by 440 metres which gives 95.89 laps which will be adjusted at the starting lap. Therefore the start for the marathon will be 395 metres before the official start line to make up the distance .
Answer: Timing chips (Chips are available for purchase at 5 dollars). Progressive Results will be displayed on a TV screen in the timing tent and periodically on the big screens. We continue to explore the best timing methods for Relay.
Answer: yes between 0700 and 0900 on the Saturday you can test your Timing chip at the start/ finish gantry.
Answer: yes. At least half of the 2.5 metre bitumen pathway will be reserved for those who have wheels or need a solid surface.
Answer: If you purchase a timing chip and complete the marathon there is a medal for individuals. (subject to a limit on numbers).
Answer: Yes. Grants Engraving, 90A Cawarra Road Carringbah has generously donated the medals for the last number of years. You can go there any time after the Relay and have your name and laps engraved for a small fee.
Answer: yes, on the screen in the timing tent and displayed on the big screen at regular intervals.
Answer: no, you can run, jog or walk or do a mixture of the above.
Answer: You can have a large or small team if attending for the whole 24 hours then a team of 10 is suggested so that you have someone on the track throughout the whole 24 hours.
Answer: The track has a slight elevation of 5 metres rise in the back corner. It commences at 15 metres above sea level and reaches 20 metres at its highest point.
Answer: The Sutherland Shire Council continues to maintain the track with rolling, and grass repairs plus watering are being carried out.
Answer: There are several water points, drinking fountains and toilets trackside.
Answer: portable lighting will floodlight the track.
Answer: The relay runs for 24 hours so there is plenty of time to complete a marathon or an ultra.
Answer: No, you can come later in the day, but it is recommended to begin before 1500 on the Saturday, as there are many other activities occurring as part of relay.
Answer: The Nipper challenge will run from 10am until 10pm on the Saturday with the trophy presented on the Sunday morning.
